It's a shame that smoking among the young is still popular and I'm sure vaping has a large impact on this problem (“Vaping may have stalled decline in youth smoking,” Feb. 11). Another area that I see promoting positive attitudes toward smoking is TV and movies.
TV viewing habits are changing. People are going more to new series-based entertainment and away from traditional network shows. The majority of the series I've watched have central characters that smoke. Not only do they smoke, but they seem to be lighting up in just about every scene.
Is it that the tobacco industry is financing these shows? Is it a backdoor way of advertising since they can't run true commercials anymore? The Hollywood folks are always talking about their views on things that are detrimental to the planet and humanity yet promote smoking and gun violence in their offerings to us as entertainment. Kind of a contradiction, don't you think?
