Sin taxes save lives

With the legislature considering a cigarette tax, smokers and officials weigh in.

Thank you for publishing the commentary by Bob Embry of the Abell Foundation about the positive long-term public health gains resulting from increasing Maryland's taxes on alcohol and tobacco products (“Boost Md. taxes to improve public health?” March 8).

As a board member of the Maryland Citizens' Health Initiative Education Fund, Inc. that led the charge on these campaigns, I thank the Abell Foundation for their support and wish to highlight the role of the initaitive’s president, Vincent DeMarco, in these successes. As this report affirms, his leadership and drive have resulted in significant and lasting improvements in Marylanders' standard of living.
