No winners in the shutdown

Workers at BWI hold a rally protesting their wages and calling for an end to the government shutdown. (Barbara Haddock Taylor, Baltimore Sun video)

What poor statesmanship on the part of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and the Democratic Party to claim they “won” the government shutdown. Nobody won and the American people lost (“The shutdown is over, but federal employees can't rest easy,” Jan. 25). Sure President Donald Trump wanted funding to build a “wall, barrier, fence,” etc. and played hard ball to get it. But he had dropped the amount needed, and I bet he would have taken even half of that to get started.

Ms. Pelosi and Mr. Schumer, on the other hand, refused to include that in the funding a portion of the president’s ask, even though they had previously approved a greater amount. I put more of the blame on Ms. Pelosi and Mr. Schumer than anyone else! I would suggest that in the next three weeks, Ms. Pelosi and Mr. Schumer will put together an offer with wordsmithing that will allow the president to pursue additional installations without clearly stating that part of the funding is for a “wall.”
