Seniors lose out in GOP tax overhaul

Seniors beware! The proposed federal tax overhaul provides for doubling the basic standard deduction, which would reportedly replace and offset canceled exemptions and exceptions. In so doing, the law would eliminate valuable age and vision-related exceptions, costing seniors thousands in deduction calculations and correspondingly increased taxes. These losses would be in addition to other expiring exemptions applying to all taxpayers, seniors included (“House passes sweeping GOP tax overhaul; Senate fate less clear,” Nov. 16).

The result is a federal tax proposal that unfairly deprives seniors of age and vision (blindness) benefits and imposes an increased tax burden on a dedicated and patriotic population. Because of the announced plan for an imminent vote on this legislation, we must look to Congress for the reconsideration and repair of this possible oversight during the expected conference committee sessions. Seniors would ask for nothing more than the celebrated American virtues of sensitivity and generosity in allocation of the federal tax burden.
