Grateful for selfie sensitivity

The Village of Oak Brook held its annual ceremony amid a field of 2,976 flags commemorating the 16th anniversary of 9-11 at the Oak Brook Sports Core on Monday, Sept. 11, 2017.  Oak Brook Fire Chief Barry Liss officiated the ceremony.

We applaud Hayley Bronner's article in The Sun, its character and sensitivity ("Wanted: selfie sensitivity," Oct. 23). I am a Vietnam combat veteran and former associate dean at American University. My wife is a former employee of Pan Am and United Airlines who volunteered to fly R&R flights into Vietnam during the war and who knew colleagues who were aboard the United flights that were brought down on 9/11. Today's shallow selfie-centric culture preaches instant gratification and "It's all about me!" The concept of respect for people, things, and history has been trampled by the wayside. Seeing your article is reassuring that our nation will in fact have leaders who retain a deep sense of respect and character. Surely, you will be one of them.
