Drugs won’t be ‘safe’ as long as criminally trafficked | READER COMMENTARY

In this June 26, 2017 photo, Julien Montreuil, assistant director at L'Anonyme, stands outside a mobile "safe injection site" van, where drug addicts can shoot up using clean needles, get medical supervision and freedom from arrest, in Montreal, Canada. (Paul Chiasson/The Canadian Press via AP)

The editorial that recommends the establishment of safe drug use sites is correct, but there are a few more issues to discuss (”Want to reduce overdoses? Give people a safe place to do drugs,” Jan. 29).

They shouldn’t be called “safe” drug use locations, because recreational drug use, where drugs are sourced from the criminal underworld, is inherently unsafe. These locations should be called “less unsafe” drug use locations.

The locations could become a bit safer if the drugs could be sourced from a legal outlet at a reasonable price. That would use market forces to put the drug cartels out of business. I realize that this would be difficult to get through the legislature.
