The working poor in America have a difficult road. Their wages have lagged behind inflation for many decades, and at this point, their families cannot live well on these wages. Compassionate people like President Barack Obama have taken the plight of the poor to heart and reached out to help them. Mr. Obama instituted and supported the Affordable Care Act as a means to give the working poor a chance to have access to reasonable health care. The Republican party has not shown much compassion for the poor in recent decades.

The decision by President Donald Trump, with the support of the Republican Congress, to stop funding monthly subsidies to the insurance companies will mean that millions of poor people will not be able to receive health care ("Trump to end ACA subsidies, signs order to expand insurance plans outside of Obamacare," Oct. 12). These Republicans seem to view harm to the poor as just one of the costs of doing business. People will die because of this action. Shame on President Trump. Shame on the Republicans. Shame on The United States of America.
