Let the 'kings' pay for Pimlico, not us peasants

Since horse racing is known as the "sport of kings," let the royalty spend their millions and not take it from us taxpayers if the Maryland Stadium Authority decides to renovate Old Hill Top (“How to keep Preakness at Pimlico,” May 17). I read recently that they are spending $426,000 for a study to decide what to do because of the Preakness. That is a lot of our money. I bet 90 percent of the Preakness fans never go back any other time of the year but that one day. Just move the race to Laurel Park.

Just think what could be done to fix up the area and provide decent low cost housing with that kind of money, or fix the awful roads all over town, or the water pipes that keep bursting, or build new schools. I also read that it cost taxpayers $425 million in interest payments for the 25 years Camden Yards has been around.

King Peter Angelos, owner of the O's, should return that to us from his billions. He sure doesn't put it back into the team by building a decent farm team or hiring more scouts. It is time that we stop spending money on professional sports and put it to good use where it is needed.
