With latest trade, Orioles have written off the season | READER COMMENTARY

Relief pitcher Richard Bleier throws live batting practice to Orioles teammates in February as manager Brandon Hyde watched his outing at the Ed Smith Stadium complex. File (Lloyd Fox/Baltimore Sun)

The Orioles traded our best left-handed pitcher in the bullpen, Richard Bleier, for a player to be named later (”Even if the Orioles keep winning, Mike Elias might keep trading,” Aug. 2). How is that going to help us this season?

The Orioles chances of getting in the playoffs were slim. Now with the left-hander gone, their chances are slimmer. It makes no sense this early in the season give up on the team. Mr. Elias says he wants the team to do well this year, but his actions don’t back that statement up. This is a crazy abbreviated year. Anything can happen.

Boston’s ace is shut down due to the virus. Numerous players have decided not to play. The Marlins, as reported, will be fielding a semi-minor-league team. In fact, it is likely that the team that stays healthy and on the field has the best chance to make the playoffs. The fact is Mike Elias has written the team off, and both the fans and the team know it.
