Local veterans burn NFL jerseys in protest of the way owners have responded to the national anthem controversy

According to Peter Schmuck’s recent column on the NFL’s troubles, football fans largely viewed Colin Kaepernick’s kneeling during the singing of our National Anthem as a display of disrespect for our military (“Controversy punctures the NFL’s aura of economic invincibility,” Nov. 21). As a veteran who served as an officer in the U.S. Navy, I fail to see any connection between Mr. Kaepernick’s actions and the military.

I view it as a protest against the injustices that pervade in our society, and I consider him as a hero who is willing to sacrifice his livelihood and reputation to achieve a more perfect union. Those who disagree need to look at the facts or take a look inside their souls.
