How 'Maryland, My Maryland' could easily be updated

A bill that received preliminary approval in the state Senate would designate "Maryland, My Maryland" as the "historic" state song.

I think we should reconsider ditching Maryland's state song. After all, it's really just "O Tannenbaum" with different lyrics. I'm all for keeping the tune, let's just change some of the lyrics (“The debate over Maryland’s state song is a familiar refrain,” March 15).

Change "northern scum" to "southern scum" and get rid of that nonsense about a "tyrant's heel" and instead substitute something about how the traitors in Maryland not only deserved to rot in prison but also deserved to be executed for taking up arms against the United States (as the Constitution specifies). Voila! A new version of "Maryland, My Maryland" that is honest about our checkered history and also teaches young people a lesson about patriotism and the Constitution.
