Larry Hogan should run for president — just not as a Republican

"We should never use the word 'never'" says former Gov. Parris Glendening on a potential Larry Hogan presidential run, after Hogan's State of the State address. (Amy Davis / Baltimore Sun video)

As a resident of Maryland for 65 years and a Democrat for 90 percent of my voting years, I think the idea of Gov. Larry Hogan running for president is on the wrong track (Hogan 2020: Is the presidential buzz a good thing or a bad thing for Maryland?Jan. 28). After leaving my home state of Maryland and moving to a state that is Republican, I have seen things differently than a Maryland Republican. Looking from outside in from another state, Mr. Hogan is a middle-of-the-road kind of candidate. His views seem like they lean right in his state, but when you leave Maryland you can see he is really a leader that knows how to balance both parties in a left leaning state.

So, here is my take. Mr. Hogan has zero chance to win a national Republican election, but he would have a much better chance if he ran as a Democrat. He could bring a too-far-left party back to the middle and is far better then what the Democrats are offering. I think people will see a fresh sensible person that has something for everyone.
