There are many people in America today with mental health problems, and we need to help them. All Americans know that the police only show up after the shooting starts. Maybe we could make it easier for America’s legal gun owners to have carry permits to protect themselves and maybe stop a shooter before many people are shot (“America’s deadly weekend: The guns,” Aug. 5).

Most Americans fear the overreach of government than they do a mass shooter. You only have to look at the crazy ideas coming out from the candidates for federal office — Medicare for all, free college, open borders and health care for illegal immigrants. We need to stop all forms of madness.
