Baltimore needs a stronger gun law

Baltimore leaders on Friday proposed a mandatory sentence for illegal gun possession in the city. (Lloyd Fox/Baltimore Sun video)

Oh Baltimore, my beloved city, you are going to get exactly what the City Council says you deserve — perhaps 1,000 people shot by the end of the year, and homicides, now at 200, will skyrocket. Parents, neighbors and church groups will rally in the streets pleading for help to end the violence, but to no avail ("Baltimore City Council committee guts proposal to create mandatory sentence for gun offenders," July 25).

You can expect to have businesses think twice about moving into (or staying in) our otherwise desirable location. And please prepare yourself to have your reputation further soiled by cable show hosts and, yes, the president of our country in discussing the high crime rate and our inability to make and enforce strong, reasonable gun legislation.

You deserve better, Baltimore. The citizens of this beautiful city know that it is the members of the City Council who must have the courage and common sense to make a sincere commitment to fight crime effectively by passing strong gun laws.

Baltimore, let City Council members know that you want them to do their jobs!
