A decades-long lack of government oversight

"Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House" describes an out-of-control government that can be traced well before Donald Trump's election.

Thank you, Jonah Goldberg (“‘Fire and Fury’ is much ado about nothing new,” Jan. 6)!

Finally, someone important has voiced the truth — my generation (70s age group) and the ones coming up behind me failed to provide oversight of what their government has been up to for the past 40 years.

Mr. Goldberg writes well, but when I express these facts to my friends and acquaintances, they look at me with incredulity. They share many traits — reduced focus and attention spans (try having more than a two minute conversation), diminished hearing and sight, total absorption in their technological baubles and beads, total oblivion to the circumstances in our country which would require many years to correct, if even possible.

And I love H.L. Mencken's definition of democracy: "The theory that the common people know what they want and deserve to get it good and hard." Unfortunately, I don't know if the abilities or wills to rebuild will be there.
