Buried in the initial reports about the Twitter storm attack on Baltimore was the source of those attacks. President Donald Trump was reportedly furious about the move by the House Oversight Committee, chaired by Rep. Elijah Cummings, to subpoena work-related communications on the personal devices of his daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner (“Timeline: The history of clashes between Trump and Cummings that led up to the president’s Twitter attacks,” July 29).
Isn’t that practice one reason he attacked former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton with “lock her up” chants? The underlying question becomes what is he trying to hide? Is it the use of political connections to further family business financial gains? Or something else?
The focus has been on President Trump’s racism, with one defender claiming that the president attacks all opponents equally regardless of race. Mr. President, you can be both at the same time — an anti-democracy equal opportunity attacker against anyone who opposes you and a racist using racial slurs in those attacks.
I have the deepest respect for Representative Cummings and am proud to be from Baltimore.
