Eligibility for COVID-19 vaccination has far outpaced availability of vaccination. I myself will become eligible in Maryland’s Phase 1C, which is predicted to become active sometime in March. When I do become eligible, I will delay seeking a vaccine for at least three more months. Why? I have no pressing need for vaccination. My bosses support work from home, the job itself can be done from home, I have no nearby relatives whom I long to visit, I know how to minimize my exposure and I do not object to doing so (”How to sign up for the coronavirus vaccine through Maryland counties, hospitals,” Jan. 23).
So, I will yield my place in line to someone who truly needs vaccination: a truck driver, a grocer, a diner cook, an electrician, a plumber, a teacher, a preacher, a lonely grandparent. I will not clog the websites or the phones or the clinics until I’m sure that people who need vaccination to do their work, to care for their families, to keep society running for me and for themselves, have had the opportunity they need to get vaccinated.
