Baltimore City Mayor Catherine E. Pugh discusses the issues surrounding the removal of the Confederate monuments in the city. (Jerry Jackson, Baltimore Sun video)

In apparent retaliation for the racist actions of hate groups in Charlottesville, certain Baltimore City council members and Dan Rodricks (August 14) now want Confederate-era statues in Baltimore not just removed but destroyed and even melted down to make coins.

There is certainly recent historical precedent for doing so. Both the Taliban in Afghanistan and ISIS in Syria and elsewhere tore down and destroyed countless statues, artwork and other items of historical significance they found offensive, sometimes even melting the objects down into coins. Of course, the council members and Mr. Rodricks will assert the moral high ground in doing so — just as the Taliban and ISIS did.

And why stop there? Why not destroy the Washington Monument in Mount Vernon? George Washington owned hundreds of slaves. Why honor such a man who enslaved human beings?

Or, perhaps, cooler heads should prevail instead?
