Buried within all the positive news in the article, "Baltimore-area home sales and prices rose in August amid falling inventory" (Sept. 12), is an alarming fact for city residents who own homes. Baltimore is the only jurisdiction where the median sales price fell. Although this is good news for people moving to the city, it is bad news for people leaving.
It also reinforces the earlier article, "Baltimore is one of the worst metros to make money from selling a house, Zillow says" (Sept. 7), because many city home owners should expect little, if any, profit when they do sell. With the city's high property tax rate, high transfer tax and real estate agents' fees, buyers should carefully consider their circumstances and whether it makes sense to buy in the city because it may be a value buying in but a financial loss selling.
