Lori's concern for abused children rings hollow

Three victims of sexual abuse at the hands of priests speak about their experiences in a video released as part of a massive grand jury report released in Pennsylvania.

Baltimore Archbishop William E. Lori’s remarks regarding his diocese’s care and concern of children and the victims of priestly sexual abuse rings hollow (“Keeler accused of bringing abusive priest to Baltimore archdiocese,” Aug. 14). Archbishop Lori’s full statement can be read here.

At no time has this diocese taken full responsibility for the horror at Archbishop Keough High School. While in the legal system, the Rev. Joseph Maskell can only be referred to as an “alleged pedophile,” the church has no such restriction and can freely state the obvious fact that Joseph Maskell molested untold numbers of children. Despite Archbishop Lori’s knowledge of such, this diocese remains mute.

It is time we Catholics and community demand an accounting of the failed leadership. Since the church appears incapable of doing the gut-wrenching evaluation of its own inherently flawed structure, it is time Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh initiated a grand jury investigation. I believe its findings will be no less chilling than that of Pittsburgh’s investigation.
