I have been following several of your letters regarding Sen. Jim Brochin and feel a need to respond in defense of the man and his record ("Brochin has been a friend to the NRA," April 6).
Senator Brochin has long been a true friend to our community in northern Baltimore County. I met him five years ago when he championed a grassroots effort to demand accountability and transparency from the past administration of Baltimore County Public Schools. Senator Brochin went above and beyond to represent the concerns of all of his constituents in District 42, and has continued to do so in many other instances since that time. Independence and the ability to reach across the aisle and effect positive change are traits that Senator Brochin has demonstrated over the years and that are imperative in our next county executive. Surprisingly, instead of being lauded for his inclusive style, he has been vilified as unprogressive and a DINO (Democrat In Name Only).
I am a progressive Democrat myself. I would never be comfortable supporting Senator Brochin for county executive if I were not impressed with his reliable support and leadership on issues that are important to me and represent progressive values. His record as an environmental leader and supporter of women's issues, particularly access to reproductive health care and protecting victims of rape and domestic violence speaks volumes about his priorities. He voted for a fair living wage in Maryland and supported common sense gun control legislation designed to keep firearms out of the hands of domestic abusers and the Firearms Safety Act of 2013.
For all of these reasons, I am proud to support Senator Jim Brochin in his candidacy for Baltimore County Executive.
