It is beyond sad to hear about the continued killings in and around the Baltimore region (“Baltimore County police identify man killed in Catonsville; victim would’ve turned 30 this week,” Jan. 16). I believe it’s time to try a completely new approach. My suggestion is to advertise and promote a “Snitch to be Rich” campaign.

We should offer significant monetary awards to those who come forward, and bring those to justice who are leading the drug trade and vicious murders. We can hire someone like dispute resolution attorney Kenneth Feinberg to determine fair compensation for those who offer information, based on the types of criminals consequently apprehended. We should also call on role models in the Baltimore area to support the “Snitch to be Rich” campaign, such as rappers who could produce lyrics. High profile names — like Will Smith, who happens to be married to a Baltimore native — can hammer home the importance of this approach and strike fear in those who deserve to be fearful. Baltimore, we can do this.
