Why do civilians need assault weapons?

CEO of Dick's Sporting Goods announced the national retail chain will no longer sell assault-style weapons.

Am I the only grandmother who doesn’t get the Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights? It gave all United States citizens the right to bear arms, but why do citizens need to have an AR-15, semi-automatic weapons and assault weapons on our streets and in there neighborhoods? Do we need these types of weapons to hunt? Because I haven't heard or read about hunters during our hunting seasons here in Maryland shooting a bear or deer multiple times. It appears that these weapons are used only for killing people and our beautiful children. Why?

Now President Donald Trump says he would like for teachers, coaches and other officials to be armed. Why? Could he be placing more guns in the schools or in the wrong hands? Why are we placing our teachers in harm’s way? I thought teachers were there to teach our children and not to fight crimes. Please tell me that a teacher is not going to stop his or her class, grab his or her gun and tell the class get under the desk while I go to shoot a shooter in the hallway. What about these coaches, aren't they supposed to coach children in some type of sports activities and not fight crimes? The schools have their hands full already. They are dealing with many children suffering emotional problems who need to be in some type of mental health program (“Trump surprises GOP lawmakers in backing some tougher gun controls,” Feb. 28).

So, why not just ask these teachers, coaches and principals and vice-principals to report these students with "psychological problems" to the school headquarters? Take this problem out of the schools because they don't know how to handle these problems and place it in the hands of the school headquarters.

Meanwhile, most people know that they need to be only 18 years of age to purchase an assault weapon. Thanks to all of our politicians not getting the law right the first time. Changing the age to be minimum age of 21 now won’t work. Don’t we all have friends?

So back to my original question: Why do we need assault weapons in today’s world anyway?
