Peter Jensen’s recent column, “Less traitorous representation for 1st District” (Jan. 13), omits one of the best ways for Rep. Andy Harris to be held accountable for his sedition: If Mr. Harris is still in office in 2022, Gov. Larry Hogan should challenge him in the Republican primary.
I understand that Governor Hogan has greater ambitions and is considering a candidacy in the 2024 U.S. presidential race. Given Donald Trump’s grip on the party, such a bid will have little chance. If more principled Republicans are going to take back their party from the Trumpists, they will likely need to wage a long, hard ground game, race by race, to bolster the voices of sanity in the GOP.
As the most respected and well-known Republican in the state, Governor Hogan could challenge and defeat Mr. Harris in 2022. It is hard to see another Republican who could do so. The timing works. The governor’s term ends in 2022, the same year as Mr. Harris’ next election.
Governor Hogan’s father voted to impeach President Richard M. Nixon. I hope that, like his dad, Governor Hogan takes a principled stand against a politician who has forfeited the public trust.
