No taxpayer-funded discounts for Amazon

Maryland governor Larry Hogan on the bill that will be part of a $5 billion package to lure Amazons Hq2 to Montgomery County, Maryland. (Erin Cox / Baltimore Sun video)

I am a big fan of Gov. Larry Hogan, as he is a fiscal conservative like me. I cringe when we spend state money to build such things as arenas and stadiums which at least can be justified when they are for the benefit of most citizens of the state — even when it profits some rich sports team owner.

I am having huge problems with the governor offering to pay $100,000 per job from Amazon, however (“Maryland governor to pitch $5 billion incentive package to lure Amazon headquarters to Montgomery,” Jan. 18). I understand over the years the company will be paying state taxes as will its employees. How many years will it take to recoup $5 billion and the interest on that amount?

Sorry, I can’t see overpaying just so Amazon shareholders can prosper. Montgomery County is already overcrowded enough as evidenced by the huge amount it is going to cost to add even more lanes to Interstate 270 even if they are toll lanes.
