Trump promotes division while embellishing how he has helped African Americans

Reading about President Donald Trump’s claim that he had done more for African Americans than almost any other president (“Trump goes after Spike Lee, calling Oscars speech a 'racist hit on your President,'” Feb. 25), is another example of the president valuing the size of one’s investments over the quality of one’s character. What does it profit any of us to have a few more dollars in exchange for Nazis marching at our universities and a dramatic increase in mass shootings and hate crimes?

As for doing more for African Americans than almost any other president, presidents for the last century have been making more progress, however haltingly, toward equal rights than President Trump. Decades after real accomplishment, we have a president who claims a dubious, short term economic victory, while restricting the ballot and sowing division and hate.
