Want fewer abortions? Try health care for all

Best way to reduce abortion rate is to provide Americans with greater access to health care - as Obamacare has.

I will steer clear of the unanswerable question regarding when life begins, but in response to recent letters I would like to point out a statistic regarding abortion in this country (“Life begins at birth — it says so in Genesis,” Aug. 7). Under President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act, the incidence of abortion in the U.S. reached a historic low (1.46 percent of women of reproductive age in 2014, according to the Guttmacher Institute under the most recent data available). This can be attributed to expansion of health care access through the introduction of affordable health insurance as well as mandated coverage of contraception by insurers.

It seems to me that if our fellow citizens who “vote pro-life” truly care about the unborn and not just about political rhetoric, they should be pulling the same lever in the voting booth as most pro-choice voters.
