Much has been said in recent weeks about the need for improved relations between the police and community residents. However, at no time have I heard the mayor, the police chief, the ministers or elected officials voice their opinion about the responsibility of the parents of the rioters to instill in their children the morals and values they need to become productive members of society.
My children grew up in the inner city, attended city public schools and graduated from a local university. They were taught to respect the law and that any indiscretion on their part against the community was a reflection on their family.
They were also taught that being educated and employed was something expected of them, so they held jobs throughout high school. They were not handed anything. They thrived and are now productive adults.
I believe that further demonstrations are unwarranted. What the protesters should do is establish parent education classes at local churches for inner-city parents who appear to have lost control of their children.
Moreover, the same gang leaders who came forward during the riots to appeal for calm should step up and declare a moratorium on the senseless violence that is going on now. Too many lives are being wasted in Baltimore.
