During the recent unrest in Baltimore where was Department of Public Works ("Baltimore communities cleaning up after riots," April 28)?
As a former soldier of the Schaefer-Palughi regime, I can tell you that DPW would have had its own trucks blocking the intersections instead of police cars.
When I saw victimized residents cleaning up the mess afterward I knew that former Mayor William Donald Schaefer and former public works director Marco "Buddy" Palughi must be turning in their graves.
Back in the day there would have been DPW crews — Highways, Special Services and Sanitation — out there immediately to take care of the clean-up and any other tasks that would lessen the burden on those victimized by the riots.
The current mayor's response and leadership fall far short of the standard set by previous officials like Mr. Schaefer and Mr. Palughi.
