Rep. Elijah Cummings got in a lot of free campaign exposure during the recent Baltimore riots ("Cummings backs justice review of police; tells Hopkins students to help lift city," May 8).
But where was he before the fires and looting? The area of Baltimore that bore the brunt of the damage is part of his 7th Congressional District.
It's fine to say, as he did at the mayor's news conference, that "we have got to put a mirror up to our faces. All of us," and that "we have to make a change."
But where was he in the news previously, bull horn in hand, venting about the needs of this community and lamenting the poor and potentially violent relations between the police and his constituents? Was there no need to address the city's ills before the arson and looting?
