Money for relief, not killing

It was a pleasure to read "From Baltimore, relief in war zones" (April 15). As a peace and justice activist, I protest U.S. warmongering for many reasons. One would be that the "War on Terror" has just created more terrorists.

And if I and others get an opportunity to speak with legislators, we urge them to use the tax dollars not for war but instead for humanitarian relief. So I congratulate Catholic Relief Services, Lutheran World Relief and the International Rescue Committee for the aid they provide. The task at hand is not only difficult but also dangerous as it takes courage to be working for peace in a war zone.

The 2003 invasion of Iraq was based on a lie — that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction — and today the people of the Middle East are still dealing with this disastrous situation. War, of course, is never the answer.
