Don't rebuild Ellicott City

U.S. Senator Ben Cardin visits Ellicott City and praises the emergency response and states that efforts are underway to secure federal aid money. (Wyatt Massey, Baltimore Sun video)

Many are demanding a rebuild of historical Ellicott City. Why? It is obvious that it is in the wrong location geographically, considering the many streams and the river nearby that have been flooding it since it was built. The flooding has been occurring long before there was any concern about climate change ("After second deluge in five years, flood-weary Ellicott City weighs how to adapt and prepare," Aug. 2).

Then there is the age of the buildings. Many are fire traps with no sprinkler systems, alarms and multiple escape routes. And the sidewalks, roads and parking? A joke in most cases.

Convert the area into a park with many drainage canals and collection ponds only accessible by walking and bike trails, which should be closed for any threats of rainy weather.
