Rain tax proponents are missing the larger issue

In her letter to the editor ("The stormwater fee and the will of the voters," March 12), Katherine W. Rylaarsdam has bought into the protecting-the-environment argument too strongly and is ignoring the larger issue.

The appropriately named "Rain Tax" is an unconstitutional, state-mandated tax (disguised as a "fee") on only a portion of Maryland's nearly 5.7 million citizens. Let's put it into perspective. Let the legislature enact a law that only taxes Ms. Rylaarsdam (or myself for that matter) and no other Maryland citizen and let's see if that one would pass muster. Simple, isn't it? Unfortunately the proponents of continuing this mistake are looking at the wrong issue.
