With Maryland unable to provide a venue for live winter racing and the closing of Colonial Downs, why doesn't the Maryland Racing Commission race during the months of January and February ("Pimlico spring schedule has 21 stakes, two new bonuses," Feb. 19)?
To have only two decent racing days a year — the Preakness and Maryland Million Day — shows just how far horse racing has fallen in the once proud racing state of Maryland.
With the current owners of Laurel and Pimlico in the racing business only because of the potential revenues from slot machines and casino gambling it should surprise no one that they have canceled weeks of live racing rather than invest in renovating the tracks.
As for the promised "niceties" for current and future fans, how long have we been waiting?
