It is appalling what has happened in Baltimore during the protest. One thing that stood out, at least too me, was on national television and pictures in the newspapers was the marketing power of Under Armour. The company was a financial winner ("Under Armour remains committed to Baltimore despite unrest, Plank says," April 29).
Under Armour gained considerable promotional exposure by our politicians wearing UA items. Our congressman, Maryland's governor and Baltimore's mayor all advertised for Under Armour. Rep. Elijah Cummings wore a scarf around his neck with the UA logo on it. Gov. Larry Hogan wore a shirt with the UA logo on it and Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake wore a baseball cap featuring UA. All of these were clearly visible.
There are people who will buy merchandise simply because it is promoted by VIPs and sports figures. The sports athletes get paid amply to wear or use UA items. Do we have politicians who promote individual businesses?
Oh, I know they all purchased these items out of pocket and are proud to be shown supporting the UA. What more could a international company like UA ask for? I guess time will tell, won't it?
