However, for too many people the good news just doesn't resonate. More than 43 million Americans live below the poverty line, and over 7 million are taxed into poverty, including the nearly 23 percent of Baltimore residents living in poverty.
Across the U.S. there is also a striking gap in family wealth, with one in four African-Americans living below the poverty line and the median household income for white Americans more than 70 percent higher than that of African-American families.
Our state representatives and candidates for office must come together in the new Congress to support expanding programs with a proven track record of poverty reduction and bipartisan support like the Earned Income Tax Credit.
No matter who takes office next year, let's make sure our members of Congress act to ensure that all hard-working Marylanders have a shot at a brighter future.
