Guns, poverty and the war on drugs

It's no fun being poor. The poor want to make a buck, feed their kids and eat regularly. The poor are not necessarily well-educated. Drugs are a way to make a buck. There is a war on drugs put in place by various parts of the government. The police are government employees. If a poor man sells drugs, he is breaking the law so the police will try to stop him.

The National Rifle Association (NRA) has a grip on legislators. Anyone can get a pistol. People with violent temperaments can get a pistol. The drug business is dangerous. A poor man with a violent temperament can get a pistol. The police are scared.

Our legislatures created the war on drugs. The war on drugs has not worked. Our legislatures fear the NRA. People in the drug business can get pistols. Our state and federal legislators need to do something to protect us.

Must we all live in fear of armed hotheads ("Arrests in Baltimore plummet, and residents are fearful," June 13)? Every life matters.
