I was pleased to see your article about the new, dedicated email and phone number set up by the Justice Department for citizens to report police misconduct in Baltimore ("Justice Department sets up system for complaints about Baltimore police," June 27).
We all know that most police employees are doing a difficult job as best they can. One would have thought such a "government-in-the-sunshine" measure would have been in place for decades already, but it is still major news today.
I suggest your article be reprinted every day for a few weeks or months on the front page. After all of the events of the past several months in Baltimore, one wonders why such a huge development did not find a more prominent placement in the paper. Generally, The Sun has done an outstanding job covering the Freddie Gray case.
Imagine how much less violent things might have been had such access to the Justice Department been publicized during the riots and the trauma our city experienced after Mr. Gray's death. A place to air valid complaints and grievances should always be available as an alternative to violence and looting.
