Much has been written about the culture in the police department that resulted in abuses and unlawful behavior ("After Justice Department report, police department now faces challenge of wholesale culture change," Aug. 11).
But the city's leaders need to remember there are two sides to this problem. Anyone who thinks that the police making nice will change the criminal and social culture in the city is a not playing with a full deck.
When the police stop policing, the bad guys are going to have a field day at the expense of the entire community. We are going to change the culture of the police department, but how do we change the criminal culture in the city?
Jobs are not the answer. Sure it would be nice if everyone had a job and made $50,000 a year. But that's not going to happen.
There are jobs available, however. Maybe they are not located down the street and maybe it will take effort to get to them. But, if you want work you will find a way to make that happen.
The culture our leaders at all levels of government have created that rewards sloth is not likely to change.
