Baltimore Police Department is now using Cognitive Command training technique in its academy training. It helps police officers be aware of their surroundings, slow situations down, and resolve situations peacefully. (Algerina Perna, Baltimore Sun video)

In my opinion, we need to return to the cop on the beat. Many years ago, a police officer was referred to as a "flatfoot" which aptly described one who walked his beat. This individual would relate well to the residents and knew when something was not quite right ("Maryland officials react to Dallas police shooting," July 8).

Implementation of this program could bring about much-needed change. The officer would enjoy protecting and serving good folks who have dreamed of a better environment.
