Forget watching the cops; how about watching the crooks?

After reading your article "After Freddie Gray death, cop-watchers film police to prevent misconduct" (June 27) and the lengths to which citizens go to monitor (and possibly impede) the efforts of police, I assume equal diligence will be dedicated to monitoring the gang-bangers responsible for most of the 200-plus murders in Baltimore City annually.

Surveillance of the drug traffickers who enslave a large proportion of inner city residents — and, most tragically, the children — would also make sense.

Then there are the drug users who fund their habits for the most part through a multitude of crimes against city residents.

The occasional instance of police wrongdoing pales in comparison to the destruction caused by the gangs, drug kingpins and drug users, so logic dictates we also monitor them.

Of course this won't happen. The police are a nice, safe target and an easy scapegoat for the ills of Baltimore.

Meanwhile the self-appointed civilian police monitors, along with our clueless elected officials, have succeeded in compromising law enforcement to the point where the gangs and drug traffickers are allowed to operate with near impunity.
