Baltimore would miss its police force

So Baltimore wishes to be free of police ("Baltimore's dispirited police," May 11)? That's exactly where it's heading. Before the riots, many of the younger police officers were leaving for higher pay in the counties and federal government. Why will they stay now that they are a target? Why will any new ones apply there?

The older police officers who have spent 20 years or more proudly helping people are now retiring. Many of them were going to stay longer, but why should they? Who wants to stay in a job where your clients spit on you, call you names and throw rocks? Who wants to stay in a job where your bosses don't support you?

This city has been one of the top 10 most violent cities in America for years. It should have no problem making No. 1 this year. It will be much harder to govern the city with no police. Be careful what you wish for Baltimore, it might come true.
