Forging better police-community relations

For all the police community relations problems in the past year, I have a solution: Law-abiding, hard-working, taxpaying citizens need not associate with the people of bad influence ("Citizen video shows tension between police, residents near Freddie Gray arrest site," April 23).

I am 62 years old and have been married 40 years. Yet I know of only five times I have spoken to a police officer. I have received a couple of traffic tickets and two warnings. The other time involved a police report about a car accident.

I have spoken to two lawyers in all those years, both for wills. I never owned a gun and don't intend to.

My advice: Hold your temper, put the gun away and stay out of trouble. You won't need the police. You are not a coward if you walk away from a confrontation. You are alive.
