Don't take weapons from police

I will admit to being slightly short of ancient, but I remember in school being taught the policeman was our friend. If we were lost, afraid or whatever, go to a policeman and he would help you. My parents taught me to respect the policeman because he was there to help us.

What has happened is that now the policeman is the bad guy who cannot carry a weapon in the schools but is still expected to protect you? If an officer of the law cannot carry a weapon, how can he protect you ("School police duties change," April 1)?
