This letter is to thank the Baltimore Sun for voicing your view that the assassination of two New York police officers is a time for bringing us together ("Tragedy in New York," Dec. 23).
Just as millions marched to mourn a growing number of unarmed black men killed by police and to demand the justice system be just that — one that ensures justice for all — we can and must come together in supporting the thousands of police officers who work to protect and assist residents in every community across the U.S.
I was among those who marched for justice and for democracy. But I am also among those mourning the tragic deaths of the two New York police officers as they sat in their patrol car, and for their families, and friends, and for the young woman who was also shot by an evidently mentally ill man with a criminal record, armed with a gun.
Those who try to cast police officers and any group of people as opposing forces are not listening to the voices for justice. That a few scream that those who have protested are responsible for the despicable act of one man is at the least very sad, and if broadcast as truth, very dangerous.
Yes, it is the time to come together, those of every color, creed, walk of life, religion and profession, in brotherhood and sisterhood, as people of the United States of America.
Theresa Reuter, Baltimore
