Throughout the nation the alleged cases of police brutality have been in the forefront of the news ("Gray dies a week after his arrest," April 20). Everyone seems to be scrambling to get a handle on what is going on with our law enforcement officers, as there are more allegations than ever. There are simple ways to stop the alleged brutality, which should be in the forefront of this issue.
1: Do not break the laws of this country; if you do not break the law there will be no interaction with the police or law enforcement wherein alleged brutality could happen.
2: If a police officer tells you to obey a command, do it, don't argue and/or be confrontational. They are doing their job in trying to protect you, themselves, and other innocent people who may be caught up in the interaction.
3: If you are stopped by the police, do not run, listen to the commands that you are given and follow them whether you have done anything wrong or not. You will be given an opportunity to explain your situation.
This country is out of control regarding the violence, crime, rapes and murders. The men and women who have decided to make a career protecting you and your rights are in the same situation as a soldier in a war zone, never knowing what to expect or whom to trust. Help them by helping yourselves and following the three simple rules above. Common sense should prevail.
