Summer pet safety: Don't leave Fido in a hot, locked car

As an animal lover and owner of dogs and cats for the past 25 years, I continue to be amazed at people's irresponsibility regarding their animals' safety. I have observed on two separate occasions in the last week dogs left in locked cars on hot days with the windows barely open. On each occasion the animals were clearly in distress.

When I come upon situations like this I am saddened and discouraged that human beings would have so little regard for their pets. I must also say how impressed I was with the response to the 311 calls placed to animal control. Given the fiscal constraints the city is operating under, I want to thank our community leaders for supporting the humane treatment of our four-legged friends as valuable members of society.
