Paterakis' legacy at Harbor Bank

Paterakis' legacy at Harbor Bank

Your report regarding John Paterakis' contributions to the city of Baltimore was well deserved ("John Paterakis, multimillionaire baker and Baltimore developer, dies," Oct. 16).

However, John's unwavering support of Baltimore's only minority-controlled commercial bank, the Harbor Bank of Maryland, was not mentioned.

Up until the 1970s, the opportunities for African-Americans and other minorities to obtain mortgages and related banking services were extremely limited.

John was supportive of the bank's diversity goals, and he was also one of its original incorporators and largest shareholders, which he remained until his passing. He served on the bank's board of directors as executive committee chairman and he was always available to the bank's management. He was also instrumental in bringing business to the bank.

He will truly be missed by the Baltimore community.

George F. Vaeth Jr.

The writer is director of the Harbor Bank of Maryland.
