Immune-system hits kids hard [Letter]

Thank you for running a commentary that tackles a topic that is so hard for most educators to grasp ("Little known disorder underscores education needs," Oct. 9). I am the mother of a 13-year-old son with Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections or PANDAS.

He was misdiagnosed for nine years. School was hell for him until we got the diagnosis and I fought for what was needed for him to succeed at school. Teachers need to know about PANDAS and be educated on ways to help children get the education they deserve despite this illness.
