Bin Laden's death a time for reflection

I and others to whom I have spoken are dismayed by our fellow citizens celebrating the killing of Osama bin Laden.

I support the heroic effort of our soldiers as well as the outcome of their mission. Nonetheless, our country's taking such an action ought not be an occasion for joy or national pride. It is not as if our Olympic team had won an event or our local football team a championship.

Nor is the success of the mission a measure of our strength as a country. It is, I believe, a time for sober reflection on the suffering of the 9/11 victims and those close to them, and the very sad need to deal, as we did, with the worst in human nature.
